Wanganui Women's Bowls team wins Val Honeyfield Trophy


The Wanganui Senior Women's team with the Val Honeyfield Trophy after defeating Kapiti and Taranaki on Sunday.

The representative bowls season got underway on Sunday as the Bowls Wanganui David Jones Motors and Small Business Accounting Wanganui Women's teams hosted their Kapiti and Taranaki counterparts in a tri-series tournament at Laird Park.

It was the first time Wanganui had been involved in this competition, with conditions fine but cold.

The representative teams played their local rivals Kapiti and Taranaki at Laird Park Bowling Club on Sunday in fine but cold conditions.

The Senior team claimed the Val Honeyfield Trophy with six wins from 10 matches, beating Kapiti with five wins and Taranaki with four.

The singles player and the fours both won all of their matches which helped tip the balance of scoring in the home team's favour.

In the Women's Under 8 grade, Wanganui finished second in the Carrell Knight Shield competition.

A very strong Kapiti team dominated with nine wins and a draw, while Wanganui picked up three wins and the draw, with Taranaki having to settle for one win.

The Wanganui Senior team was: Maria Klitscher (singles); Reen Stratford, Lesley Bourke, Pauline Pirere, Jill Rohloff (pairs); Dianne Patterson, Deborah Garside, Eleni Meimaris, Judy Johnston (fours).

The Under 8 team was: Debbie Wildermoth (singles); Sharon Catchpole, Sue Jermy, Jennie Redshaw, Shirley Dollimore (pairs); Margaret Blinkhorne, Carol White, Adrienne Richdale, Ann Morgan (fours).
